Reward Alternative Pathways (Addiction) IOP

At Yellowbrick we recognize that substance abuse fundamentally distorts relationships as substances and other abuse related behaviors (gaming, compulsive sexuality, gambling, etc.) become the individual’s primary attachment and dimension for experiencing self. The Substance Abuse Specialty Program offers a comprehensive, multi-modal approach designed specifically to address the relational needs of our emerging adults. This program includes expert assessment of each individual’s substance related issues; development of individually tailored relapse prevention plans; individual sessions with the Substance Abuse Specialist; support for attending 12 Step meetings in the Evanston and Chicago community; and, three hours a week of group programming to educate and to assist members in gaining and maintaining sobriety.

Yellowbrick's evening Intensive Outpatient Program at the Consultation & Treatment Center includes:

ASP Mindfulness is an experiential group that group rotates seventeen weeks of art therapy and seventeen weeks of separate men’s and women’s yoga.

ASP Education & Discussion Group helps members understand their relationship with substance abuse and the effect it can have on all areas of their lives. This group rotates seventeen weeks of two curricula. The first focuses on the powerful relationship between shame and substance abuse. The second focuses on the principles behind the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. Relapse prevention techniques are discussed and Twelve Step participation is strongly encouraged.

ASP Interpersonal Group Therapy provides an open forum for members to explore the experiences and feelings associated with substance abuse and the struggles that are often associated with early recovery. This group promotes creating a sense of safety within which peers can share their fears and struggles and work together to try and find meaning and fulfillment in life without mind altering substances. In this interpersonal process group the focus is on relationships among members as well as the content of what is discussed.

Alcohol Substance Abuse Treatment

Alcohol abuse is a medical and mental health matter affecting the lives of Chicago’s emerging adults. Yellowbrick provides comprehensive alcohol abuse treatment using a multi-faceted approach.

Yellowbrick is located in Evanston just north and adjacent to Chicago. Servicing the Chicagoland area, Yellowbrick specializes in individualized alcohol abuse treatment plans tailored to meet the unique social and emotional needs of emerging adults. A team of 21 full-time Professional Staff including a Substance Abuse Specialist, Senior Staff psychiatrist, Education & Career Specialist and Creative Arts Coordinator collaborate with emerging adults throughout the course of alcohol abuse treatment in order to determine the amount of support needed in developing and maintaining a sober lifestyle. Yellowbrick designs the course of treatment for alcohol abuse in response to individual needs.

Alcohol abuse treatment at Yellowbrick addresses total social and emotional health. While drinking excessively may be the presenting problem for many emerging adults seeking rehab for alcohol, additional emotional issues tend to surface throughout the course of treatment. In almost all cases, alcoholism increases the vulnerability of mental health concerns like depression, anxiety, or self-destructive impulsivity. People with existing psychiatric illnesses are highly at risk for substance abuse and addiction. Yellowbrick offers a wide range of supportive services to accommodate all emerging adults, including those who cope with substance abuse and ongoing mental health concerns.

Education is a cornerstone in alcohol substance abuse treatment at Yellowbrick. Emerging adults dive deeply into topics surrounding alcohol addiction, including how alcohol dependency alters the brain and the risk factors for relapse. Educational groups engage participants with lectures, discussion, and hands on exercises. In addition to the curriculum encompassing alcohol abuse, clinicians guide emerging adults through principles of mindfulness, which includes awareness, respect and appreciation of the current moment and of any feelings that are present. By learning how to live mindfully, emerging adults have a greater possibility of making healthy choices in uncomfortable or triggering situations. This helps them resist the urge to drink.

Emerging adults in Chicago who are ready to build a sober lifestyle will find a welcoming community at Yellowbrick. Skilled and caring clinicians provide ongoing support as the emerging adult adapts to everyday sober living. By participating in group therapies and 12-step meetings offered at Yellowbrick, emerging adults can connect with other people who have had similar struggles with substances while establishing healthy habits. Supportive relationships form and friends find meaning together while striving to lead a sober life. By developing a strong Chicago support network and a sense of belonging within a sober community, emerging adults can manage risks associated with substance abuse and alcohol abuse. Recovery is sustained by the satisfactions of supportive attachments rather than intense “moments of more leading to lives of less” (Turkle 2015).

Please seek professional help if you or someone you know has a substance abuse problem.

Pinpointing problems of substance abuse

When emerging adults enter substance abuse treatment at Yellowbrick, they may display a range of physical, social, and emotional concerns. After a comprehensive assessment process, including a psychiatric evaluation, life-skills assessment, and medical evaluation, clinicians at Yellowbrick collaborate with the emerging adult to form an individualized treatment plan. Recovery plans from substance abuse may include individual psychotherapy, substance abuse counseling, art therapy, group therapy and education, 12-step meetings, and mindfulness based groups that help with managing the urges to use substances.

Commonly, individuals using substances feel disconnected from themselves, others and reality, hold a low level of self-esteem, and lose interest and motivation in doing the activities they once enjoyed. Negative feelings associated with substance abuse and other compulsive behavior disorders, like shame and anger, feel overwhelming and can result in hostile behavior. From addressing all aspects of abuse, like physical withdrawal and intense feelings of social and emotional isolation, Yellowbrick supports emerging adults throughout their recovery from substance abuse.
