Bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness, is a brain disorder that is characterized by dramatic shifts in mood and energy that impact activity levels and the ability to carry out everyday tasks. While everyone experiences the normal ups and downs of life, bipolar disorder is different because it’s a long-term condition that can often lead to risky behavior; in fact, bipolar disorder has the highest risk of suicide of any psychiatric disorder. Mood shifts can occur a few times a year or quite a few times per week.
At Yellowbrick, located just north of Chicago, Illinois, in Evanston, we treat patients with bipolar disorder so that they can learn to function independently and gain better control of their mood shifts and related symptoms. With our tailored combination of individualized mood-stabilizing medication treatments and psychotherapy, we help our patients develop strategies for everyday living, mania and depression management, and relationship building. Our unique supported apartment treatment community allows patients and emerging adults to practice what they’ve learned in therapy in a supportive, safe environment, so that they can build autonomy and eventually transition to independent living.
