Bipolar Disorder Treatment

Bipolar Disorder Treatment

Bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness, is a brain disorder that is characterized by dramatic shifts in mood and energy that impact activity levels and the ability to carry out everyday tasks. While everyone experiences the normal ups and downs of life, bipolar disorder is different because it’s a long-term condition that can often lead to risky behavior; in fact, bipolar disorder has the highest risk of suicide of any psychiatric disorder. Mood shifts can occur a few times a year or quite a few times per week.

At Yellowbrick, located just north of Chicago, Illinois, in Evanston, we treat patients with bipolar disorder so that they can learn to function independently and gain better control of their mood shifts and related symptoms. With our tailored combination of individualized mood-stabilizing medication treatments and psychotherapy, we help our patients develop strategies for everyday living, mania and depression management, and relationship building. Our unique supported apartment treatment community allows patients and emerging adults to practice what they’ve learned in therapy in a supportive, safe environment, so that they can build autonomy and eventually transition to independent living.

Who does Yellowbrick help?

Bipolar disorder treatment at Yellowbrick helps persons who experience symptoms of bipolar disorder, such as:

  • Manic and depressive episodes (such as an overly excited state or an overly long period of depression, usually lasting four or more days)
  • Behavioral changes (such as racing thoughts, being distracted, feeling fatigued, or changing eating or sleeping habits)
  • Mixed state symptoms (experiencing both mania and depression at the same time)
  • Substance abuse
  • Psychotic symptoms (such as hallucinations or delusions)

Yellowbrick’s Bipolar Disorder Treatment Program

Yellowbrick provides a true therapeutic community that encourages patients and emerging adults to develop autonomy while building relationships in the community through activities such as volunteering, education, and employment. Throughout the entire treatment process, patients benefit from the support of their peers and the Yellowbrick staff, as well as an individualized treatment approach that combines genetically-informed medication treatments with psychotherapy that will teach patients to control their manic and depressive symptoms for functional living.

With Yellowbrick’s bipolar disorder treatment, patients can expect:

  • Regular, frequent contact with our highly knowledgeable and qualified professional staff, in either the patient’s own local apartment or our supported Residence
  • Assistance creating a daily routine that will help patients manage their symptoms
  • Support learning and development of daily living strategies
  • Participation (to the extent that one is ready and willing) in a therapeutic community of peers with similar emotional and psychiatric difficulties, as well as in a supportive group setting.

The bipolar disorder treatment program is led by the psychiatric staff; an occupational therapist/life skills specialist; a substance abuse specialist (as indicated when multiple diagnoses are present); an advocate (primary therapist); and the Residence Resource Staff. Treatment typically lasts 3-9 months, with duration tailored to the individual’s needs.
