EVANSTON, Ill. — Yellowbrick, a national center of excellence working with young adults with complex mental health difficulties, is launching Core Competence Home Health Service designed to support young adults recovering from and struggling with mental illness. The goal is to facilitate development of executive function and the life-skills necessary for supported independent living.

“Young adults who have experienced a mental health related hospitalization—such as for a suicide attempt, depression, or a psychotic episode—need ongoing support for preventing relapse, sustaining self-care and getting back into the flow of life,” said Dr. Jesse Viner, CEO and Chief Medical Officer at Yellowbrick.

According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1.5 million Americans are hospitalized annually for psychosis or major depression, with the average hospital stay lasting only seven days.

“Psychiatric episodes and hospitalizations represent major disruptions in the life of individuals and families. Yellowbrick sees a huge gap between the hospital and home which results in unnecessary suffering and impairment of function,” according to Dr. Viner. “This often fuels shame and diminished self-worth, making it all the more difficult to take care of oneself and face returning to school or work.”

Starting in January 2016, Core Competence Home Health Service will offer each prospective young adult an initial assessment with a Yellowbrick occupational therapist and psychiatrist who will develop, in collaboration with the young adult, family and professionals providing concurrent care, a home health treatment plan.
