“Emerging adults,” individuals ranging in age from the late teens through the mid-thirties, face many struggles as they attempt to navigate the unique and increasingly complex challenges of this developmental phase of life. During this time, issues often arise with identity formation; self-regulation; role transitions within family, peer and intimate relationships; and the establishment of oneself as a capable and valued person within society. Young adults – already at a disadvantage with incomplete brain networking and the loss of traditional, structured community support readily available to minors – may find themselves confronted with an increasingly limited capacity to function in the world beyond home.

For many, this struggle can become deeply troubling or overwhelming. Research has established that many psychiatric illnesses emerge or accelerate throughout the young adult years, with over 20% of this population suffering from mental health difficulties associated with interrupted educational and career development, substance abuse, illegal activity and a despairing vision of themselves and the future. Many never receive the assistance required to fully enter the adult world. And, tragically, every six hours, an individual within this developmental group gives up and ends their life.

Many troubled young people and their families have become discouraged as they struggle within a healthcare system that is not established to address their needs. College health services are ill-equipped to offer intensive or extended services. A return home, without suitable treatment options, can lead to the persistence of symptomatic behaviors and disability – leaving the individual at risk for estrangement from family and personal demoralization. Continued living at home under these circumstances further distorts developmental needs and strains family bonds already weary from the turmoil and pain of psychiatric illness.

This void across the mental health treatment continuum has left distressed young adults and their families asking – “where can we turn for help?”

It is for these young men and women that we have created Yellowbrick.

It is to these individuals and their families that we offer hope.
